My friend Sarah put in a request to see more work focused outfits on the NEAT blog. She said she struggles with looking stylish yet professional, at the same time. Well good for you Sarah, because I struggle with looking like a line backer yet nerdy, at the same time. We all have our setbacks in life. Since Sarah challenged me, I challenged her . . . to photograph me, which really isn’t a challenge because she’s pretty much a pro. Here she documented me getting ready for work at home, heading out to work and ending the day with a bloody head ache and misery, so pretty much just a regular day, am I right?
We start out with a classic men’s chambray button up (and I wonder why I look like a man??) and your staple high waisted silk tie up pants. These ARE a staple people, if you don’t have a pair you must invest. And burgundy is a great colour, it looks good on almost everyone and matches with almost anything. Other great colours are forest green, raspberry and navy. NEVER get a light colour of silk pants, if you are anything like me you will sweat right through those babies before morning coffee break. Top your outfit off with a little bling and some neutral heels and bravo, you’ve just completed layer 1 of your work outfit.
Next add a sweater that adds a bit of contrast and gives a little kick to your outfit. I’ve chosen a landscape scene sweater, but golden yellow, bright red or bright burnt orange would have also done the trick. Pick a bag that’s slightly large to haul your lunch, sketch book, measuring tape, external hard drive, candy, kittens and all that other stuff around.
For your outer layer add something that’s a little over-sized so it doesn’t look like your arms are sausage links. This should compliment your existing pieces and should pick up colours already found in your outfit. Work on your death stare, we don’t come to work to make friends, we come to work to work duh, if we wanted to make friends we would join a macrame club (which we have joined and we meet Sunday afternoons, we are working on macrame pictures of our death stare). This look will instill fear into your colleagues so no one so much as breaths the wrong way around you. Mission accomplished.
Finally, the finishing touches. Grab a big scarf, slap that puppy on and call it a day! You can wear the scarf sans outer layer and sweater and just pair if with the collared shirt, take your pick. Add and subtract whatever your heart desires, or your comfort level permits. I have zero issues walking around looking like a human coat rack so I pile on the layers.
Aritizia Wilfred silk trouser pants (similar here), Mango landscape print sweater, H&M oxford shirt in premium cotton, Piece Goods wool blazer, H&M leopard print scarf, Zara bow kitten heels (similar here), Coach Tote, Warby Parky Marcel glasses, thrifted necklace
Ah yes, the end of day work hangover. But thankfully it’s the weekend!!!! So slap that miserable look off your face and go enjoy your two days of freedom!!
Thank you Sarah for your incredible handiwork, outfit challenge and indomitable friendship, always such a pleasure.
You’ve got an idea?! We want to hear from you, give us an outfit challenge for a chance to get your concept posted!!
