Like anyone, I love adding beautiful things to my wardrobe and my home. Let’s just say a great deal of online window shopping happens in my downtime. My partner and I also have more art than we have walls. What can I tell ya? I love good things. Pretty objects make me happy.
However, some of these lovely objects often have ugly histories. Mass-produced garments come from factories with abhorrent working conditions and are shipped across the world on barges, trucks, and trains belching toxic fumes into the air. Most of the cute little trinkets I drool over on Pinterest have a similar history. So, what’s a girl to do?
Sometimes buying mass-produced goods is pretty unavoidable, but when possible, one great way is to support local designers making things right here in town. It helps to keep Calgarians making cool shit, and it cuts out some of the wastefulness of going to big box stores. Whenever possible, it’s a great call to give these folks some love. We’ve selected some great makers of clothing, art, jewelry, and other rad things being made right here in Calgary.

She designed a skirt that is friendly for walking and biking in this windy city. The Commute skirt is a no-brainer – it comes in one adjustable size, and is classic enough to go with anything. The wrap design is pure genius, and it comes with extra safeguards to ensure you don’t flash your unmentionables to fellow commuters. This gal’s a NEAT blog fave for many reasons, y’all.

A punk, too-cool-for-school aesthetic permeates this whole line, with a high fashion twist. Their Gothletics speak to me, and would be great for anyone “exercising while punk”. Interesting shapes, silhouettes, and textures will turn heads and keep you comfy. Badassery included with every item.

Ready to go with a mustachioed face resembling the designer’s own, these tshirts bring the cool factor like nobody’s business. You’ll also find sexy men’s swimsuits, button up shirts (with sleeves and without), and artwork. You can also wear them no matter what your gender, they’re too bomb to not be for everyone.

Ever thought about a custom leather bouquet for your wedding? Neither did I, and then I saw this and thought, “damn.” The how-did-they-think-of-that feeling saturates all that they do. You can get a custom-made clutch or bracelet at one of their Apple Genius-style bar events, or nab a monogrammed keychain, wallet, or whatever you want.
